Welcome to another edition of Bread Bakers!
This month we’re celebrating that fall favorite, grapes!
Here in eastern PA it’s harvest season for grapes in the vineyards. Many people also grow grapes on trellises in their backyards. One local winery even does the old-fashioned grape stomping!
Our challenge for September is to use grapes in any fashion in our bread.
Dried or fresh, use your favorite grape variety baked in the bread of your choice.

I chose golden raisins as my grape variety because I love the little zing of sweetness you get when you bite into one!
I even like raisins on top of my bread like in this Raisin and Ham Crostini!
Walnuts are my go to nut for baking breads and muffins.
Like in my Gingerbread Breakfast Loaf.

Golden Raisin Walnut Bread
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons shortening
- 1 egg
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 3 cups flour
- 1 tablespoon plus 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup chopped walnuts
- 1 cup golden raisins
Instructions
- Cream together sugar and shortening. Add in egg.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder and salt.
- Add half the milk then half the dry mix. Repeat.
- Stir in raisins and walnuts. Pour batter into a well-greased loaf pan.
- Bake at 350 for approximately 50 minutes until inserted toothpick comes out clean. Cool on rack 10 minutes before removing from pan. Cool loaf on rack completely before cutting.
