I received no compensation for featuring these restaurants. All opinions are my own.
Lehigh Valley is rich in history. Some of the oldest taverns in the area are still in operation. The roadhouses on the outskirts of town offer unique cuisine. These comforting stops fed and housed many a weary traveler. For decades and in some cases centuries, people made the stops to refuel their spirit and rest their bodies.
I’d like to share my 5 favorites with you. Each is known for their hospitality, great food and atmosphere. Grumpy’s and Hops feature local musicians too. I think you will find something to enjoy at each one.
First up for the barbecue lover. Grumpy’s BBQ Roadhouse. This 1840’s Tavern welcomes you with open arms and a hot plate of smoky goodness.
Grumpy’s BBQ Roadhouse
3000 Mauch Chunk Road
Allentown, PA 18104
Grumpy’s smokes all their meats on the premises using real hickory wood. The flavors are developed from Southern and Cajun roots based in New Orleans, Saint Louis, the Carolinas, and the Tex-Mex area. BBQ lovers can enjoy beef, pork and chicken with deep flavors old country style with collard and cornbread among the sides offered.
I crave the pulled pork plate with a tall Black & Tan. Well worth the trip. But get there early if you want a seat at the bar on entertainment night!
Easy to find from route 22, 309, or 78 we are only 3 miles north of Allentown on Mauch Chunk Road.
Next stop Hops Fogelsville Hotel.
Hops Fogelsville Hotel
7921 Main St.
Fogelsville, PA 18051
Ph. (610) 395-3999
Hops Fogelsville Hotel
This establishment was built in 1798. Hops is known for their steaks, serving Certified Angus Beef® brand. Seafood, pork, chicken, veal and pasta round out the menu. Good food and a great place to make memories.
In warm weather this courtyard hosts local musicians in a variety of genres. Relax and enjoy!
Hops boasts they serve the best Quesadillas in the Lehigh Valley. I agree! Hops steak quesadillas rock!
In the mood for great pizza? Maybe a hearty Italian meal is calling you. You need Armetta’s Italian Restaurant & Pub.
Armetta’s Italian Restaurant & Pub
301 Main Street
Emmaus, PA 18049
Armetta’s Italian Restaurant & Pub
Armetta’s is located on the main street in Emmaus, PA. Emmaus was known for the railroad tying together local manufacturing including iron ore production, silk and cigars. Centrally located, Emmaus soon became a hub for production and activity. What better place to eat then Main Street?
If you go to Armetta’s I highly recommend the Seafood Manicotti stuffed with baby shrimps, baby scallops, topped mozzarella cheese and Alfred served over a bed spinach. Manga!
Samuel Owens serves up a bit of Americana. Soups, sandwiches, and entrees from tacos to fish and chips.
Samuel Owens
Chestnut & 2nd Street, Coplay Pennsylvania
Samuel Owens
Samuel Owens sits on the corner of a busy Coplay street right before the bridge out of town. Or into town, it’s a matter of perspective. You can find many types of cuisine at Sam’s. They do it all justice. My favorite thing there is the Seafood Bisque. No matter what I order it’s always some bisque first. Sam’s has a great sense of humor too. They list Guinness Black & Tan as an appetizer! Monthly menus include game nights, discounts and more.
Stefano’s Sicilian Grille provides rustic dishes with a strong Sicilian influence in a cozy and friendly atmosphere.
Stefano’s Sicilian Grille
5364 Nor Bath Blvd.
Northampton, PA 18067
Stefano’s Sicilian Grille
If you are looking for true Italian dishes try Stefano’s. Here you’ll find classics like Saltimbocca, and Fried Calamari. I highly recommend the Lobster and Crab Ravioli!
We’ve celebrated more than one birthday and Valentine’s Day at Stefano’s. So good!
Thanks for following along on a quick tour of my favorite roadhouses. Check back on March 7th for a collaboration SoFab post of best local restaurants gathered from members.
